Logos are the sign of what you are. It’s the way people remember you. If you get it wrong you are lost in the jungle. It is the first impression anyone gets of your company. There is no way that someone who doesn’t know what you and your business are about can design a logo for you. A deep understanding of your principals and the goals that your company wishes to achieve, have to be taken into account to achieve a true rendition of the company. That goal needs to be portrayed in the overall rendition of the logo.
For a start if someone says they can do it for you very inexpensively, you need to realize you are going to get some churned out cheap design created on the fly. Real designs will be at the job for weeks. They will consult with you. Once they have an idea of what you are about, they will then research the industry as a whole. They will look at photographs of the work you do. They might even visit factories to see it in action.

From that step, they will start to draw out ideas of what they think might work. It will not just be one idea it might be hundreds. This is to give them selves personally, a time to look at what they have learned. These are the general concepts of what you are about. At this stage, they will return to consult again. Now they can show you what they are thinking. You will tend to be able to tell them if they are on the right or the wrong track. Sometimes it’s a good idea to step back from a design to see what it looks like to others. If a client has very strong ideas of what is needed, they will tell you at this stage. If not then it will be up to you to guide them in the best direction for the company. A logo isn’t a here today and change it tomorrow item. It’s going to be the foundation of bedrock that a company is built upon.
People tend to get fond of a particular logo and woe betides anyone who changes it. The ructions that can cause are tremendous.
When you are presented with the logos that a designer has done, it is normal for them to show you only one or two. These are what they consider the best of their work. Be aware that there are others in the background, which might have a completely different twist to the presented logos. If you are not completely happy with the outcome ask to see the others. They will probably not disclose that there are others but when doing the creating, they run through hundreds of ideas. This is one of the reasons that no good design can ever come out for a couple of hundred dollars. The only way that can happen is if you have totally conceptualized the idea prior to approaching a designer, and he is merely drawing out the design you already have in mind.
Those are all things to keep in mind when you go ahead and start your quest for your logo.
