It is agreed that, in the world of website creation, there are distinctions between developers and designers. There is often a clash of egos among the two. What would happen if they were put in a locked room to work out their differences? Would it not turn out that they would find common ground, somehow? This could definitely be achieved if they reviewed what they had in common, put themselves in each other’s shoes, and learned a bit about each other’s roles.
The truth of the matter is that they are not in competition. They are working towards the same goal. They are just dealing with different areas of the website creation. The work of a designer is no more important than the work of a developer. Both are required in the success of a project. Unfortunately, what happens a lot in the industry is they are not together in the beginning, as part of the creation process.
Often times, especially in large firms, it is the stakeholders that meet in the early stages to brainstorm ideas. The actual creators are not participants of these meetings. They are only advised of the final decisions made. This information is provided just before they are to perform their specialized task. This makes it difficult for them to feel part of the project, because they don’t know the steps, or reasons for the steps, taken before their involvement.
If designers and developers were involved in the process, especially at the beginning, animosities could be eliminated, or at least down sized. If they had the opportunity to discuss each other’s point of view and reasons why they made specific decisions, there would be a deeper understanding. Designers would be able to advise the developers the reasons for their choices and vice versa. If there was a problem, they could try brainstorming with each other to find a solution. The designer and developer would see that the work they do, actually complements the other.
If one was to study design and development, they would see that principles of acceptable design are very much like acceptable development. Looking closely at this idea shows that designers and developers have a lot of complementary interests. Development does not only involve technical aspects and designing does not only involve artistic elements. Developers should be creative in composing out functionality and designers should think about how form is affected by functionality.
Competing to be the best in the world of website creation is staggering. As more and more generations join the ranks, it is going to get worse. Creators must work more diligently and adequately in order to maintain the caliber of work and innovative thinking that consumers and clients expect. In order for this to happen, developers and designers need to work together, not against each other. After all, they are playing for the same team. If they were not to worry about individual job titles long enough, they would be more prosperous and would like their roles a lot more.
