If you are a freelancer, you might find that you often have more clients than you can manage. Work sometimes piles up, and it is hard to meet deadlines. However, the opposite can also occur. Many freelancers, especially beginners, find that some months they simply cannot get enough work to pay the bills. If you have ever been in this situation, you probably tried to grab any clients that you could. If you do not have enough steady work, and hence cash flow, you cannot afford to be too choosy. Following is some advice that will help you to find clients quickly when you need to.
Find a partner
Freelancing can be a very stressful thing to do. You have to manage your own finances, find clients, manage projects and deal with clients, all while trying to get your work done on time. Many people find that it is easier to divide the work between two or more people. Collaborating with colleagues is a great way to do business. When you have a partner or small team, you will find it easier to get work.
This is because, while you might not have any work, your partner or partners might have an excess of work. You can share the clients that they do not have time for, and vice-versa. If you have more than one person on your team, you can more easily advertise. Two or more people can get more exposure than just one person alone can. Some people also feel more secure if they are dealing with a small group or partnership, because they are more confident the work will be done well, and on time.
Former clients
Contacting people who you have worked for in the past is a great way to find new projects. If you want to entice them into hiring you again, try giving them some sort of discount in the form of a limited offer. This is a great approach, because people will often find some work for you just so that they can get the discount. Even if you are working for less, it is better than not getting any work at all, and hence no money.
Work boards
This might seem like an obvious way to find work, but many people still overlook it. Instead of always looking at the same job boards, you should try finding new ones, the more boards that you frequently look at, the better the chance that you will find good work. If you post “looking for work” threads on job boards, you will gain exposure, and hopefully in time you will get more work.
Referring a friend
Setting up a referral program is a great way to build word of mouth and get more clients. If someone refers a new client to you, offer to give that person a discount, as payment for referring someone. This is a great way to build up a client base. Keep in mind, that when you hand out discounts, you will have to work for less. However, as mentioned above, this is still better than having no work.
