The unruly internet actually does have some rules that they have made for themselves. Woe betides anyone that transgresses them. You will be ostracized. What is considered non cool? Well there are some strange rules sometime, or they seem strange to a newcomer. However, they have developed for a reason. And unruly as the internet can be at times, especially when kids of all ages are let loose, the underlying fact is that the mom and dad syndrome still exists.
Some of the unwritten laws of Internet Blogging
Twitter and Blogging have a few things in common.
The most common thing between the two is the sites and posts that are read, give good worthwhile info. If you don’t give a good, sustainable on going content of high quality, you will soon lose your readers. Offer a free service to people who actually help them. This will always be appreciated.
Post only when you actually have something of value to impart
Posting just for the sake of saying something without adding anything of value wastes people time and really is not appreciated especially if it’s done several times in short succession. You need to judge how many times you are going to post by the content of the site. Try to keep the posts down to between 500, and 600 words. It’s about the most people can digest at one time. Sometimes all you need to do is write a 100 word up date and that is all it needs. Remember on Twitter you only have 140 digits. KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid. If you want to expand do it on another page and link to that page. If people are interested they can read on. The original article should cover the basics and be expanded on the next pages. If you post too often on Twitter you will find yourself denuded of followers. People do not like to keep on getting what can almost be considered spam.
Participate in ongoing tweets and posts
Both tweets and posts are conversations and need to be feed with relevant participation. Note I said relevant. Do not interject something about the weather when they are talking about SEO or something similar. That will be ignored and get you put out in the snow you are talking about. Visit the sites of the people you are talking to and leave comments. This is interaction, and it’s like making friends. You both need to participate. This applies to all sections of the social networks. If you have something in common with someone link to them on other sites too.
The world is waiting. The leaders of any industry get involved with the people they are following and so must you if you are to amount to anything.
Dare to be Different.
Stand out as far as design and your posts are concerned. However, stand out in a good way. Ask a few of the leaders to make guest posts on your site. Have long articles that actually address problems people have in the sub comments section. While you write a short article in the main blog area go into it in depth in the next page and link the two. It’s important to give value to any reader. Consider what you actually do know about and concentrate on that.
It’s no good being a copycat. You want to stand out. This is what makes people come back. If you can design a Twitter page that stands out, then so much the better. You might even offer to do it for a couple of your good and faithful followers.
Contact and join pages
These two pages should be visible and above the line and easy to work. Don’t ask for a ton of info. Ask for what you actually need and nothing more. People don’t need to give you their home address to get an email. Use your ‘About’ and ‘Bio’ sections to tell people about you.
Use White Space.
Make it easy to read your posts by utilizing the white space around sections of your articles. Spacing is important for readability. Check your spelling. And use short sentences.
Good Luck.
