What Does the Future Holds for Web Designers?

It seems like every week there is a new article about where the internet is going to go. Many believe that it will deliver more of the same and others state that there are big changes in store. The truth is no one really knows what type of changes the internet is going to see in the next 10 years.

After all, it was only 15 years ago that Clifford Stoll wrote an article titled “The Internet? Bah! The article stated that many of the things that are now common on the internet would never happen.

As a web designer or developer, the changes that are going to take place are imperative to our field of work. We are going to have to adapt if we are still going to make money doing the job we know and love.

Content and Data

If you are like most of the tech savvy world of today, chances are that you own some type of smart phone. If this is the case, think of all that you do from your phone’s browser. Most of it is all done on apps, there is an app to check your email, an app for Facebook, and twitter, and YouTube, the list goes on and on.

When you think about word press and other sites, this is what the web is coming to. The site design means little to people. In fact, most sites all look the same in a mobile browser. No one really cares about design anymore…well some people still appreciate a great design, but overall content is king.

All people really care about is finding the information that they are looking for. As long as the design is simple, does not cause a headache, and they can get to information quickly, most people could care less what it looks like.

Content Funnels

Having thousands of apps for people to search through is not likely to happen. Think about all of the websites you visit in a year, having that many apps is simply crazy. What is more likely to happen is that information will be delivered through a common aggregator.

Look at Facebook, how much information is on there. It is almost as if Facebook is the new internet or at least trying to be. You can read blogs, watch YouTube videos, and even visit pages on most topics without ever leaving Facebook.

Google is one of, if not the most forward thinking businesses on the internet. The company has their hand in everything from their number one ranked search engine, to its two operating systems, not to mention phones, and web applications, they simply offer it all and they are not slowing down. It seems as if they want everything on the net to go through them at some point in time.

What does this all Mean?

When it comes to web designers and the future, the jobs seem to be dwindling. Why would anyone pay someone to design a site when they can use a template and then run their content through Facebook, Google, or Twitter?
