Lomography and all photography using this style have been on the increase in these last years and is becoming a growing trend. This trend has been greatly influenced by Smartphone applications, which allow all users to imitate this style.
The characteristic of Lomography is its particular use of light. Many lomographic photos have particular effects, such as ultra-saturated colors, blurred images or light flooding and exposing film. These are just a few of the peculiarities this effect causes, using imperfection to create an artistic image, as opposed to the perfection used in today’s traditional photography.
Lomography also uses spontaneous techniques, which are those images that are taken at a whim, producing more natural images. These so called defects are what render lomography unique and trendy.
Nowadays it is easy to produce these effects without having to purchase sophisticated equipment. Applications such as Vignette for Android and Hipstamatic for iPhone can be used to create these spontaneous effects. If you want the best effects, the cameras used originally will produces the best images and are less expensive than LSR; however, nowadays with the digital becoming an integrated part of images, film developing can be difficult to process, unless you do it yourself.
Originally lomography cameras were produced by the Leningrad Optical and Mechanical Union (LOMO) in St. Petersburg, Russia as early as 1930. In 1984 the LOMO LC-A Compact Automat camera was created and became the masterpiece of the photographic construction firm. The Holga a 120mm camera produced in China is also considered as a good apparatus that will produce low-fi images, such as can be had with lomo cameras.
However, the exclusive distributor of the Lomo LC-A cameras besides the Soviet Union is the Lomographische AG in Austria, which also sells accessories for lomography equipment and publishes a magazine related to lomography.
You do not need to have an application for Smartphone or a Lomo camera to achieve lomography effects, as you can use Photoshop to create the same effects, by using the tutorials available in addition to several other actions.
Understanding the definition of lomo, will help users fully comprehend what this kind of photographic effect will create in images. The term lomo comes from “lomography,” which was the use of images and effects created by a company in Austria that specialized in lomographic art by using special types of products in the early 80s. The name was used after the LOMO PLC in Russia that was the head of the lomographic movement. In 2005 the LOMO cameras went out of production and this type of imagery is no longer used as a special effects technology.
Fortunately similar lomography effects can be created with the use of Photoshop, as the use of lomo can greatly enhance pictures and give them more feeling and depth.
