Even though Google Chrome, Firefox and the like are mostly the browsers of choice, there are several others available for you to choose from should you so wish. The actual ratios of use of various web browsers are rather lopsided.  The one thing about most people is they download one of the well known browsers and don’t look further. It’s a good idea to take a look at what else is available you might well find that there is another, which is more to your liking. I have looked at a few and several have a good deal to offer. The first to take a look at is Maxthon. The thing here is that you can download various browsers both for both mobiles and also …

I know that as a designer you have been asked to do various family jobs for free. When you are starting out you usually agree because it is a good experience and its exposure. The trouble comes later. When you are starting it gives you an opportunity to get the experience and also gives you the opportunity to add to your portfolio. All this is good. You have time to give for free because it gives you an opportunity to expand your knowledge. Your biggest trouble usually comes from family members that are proud of what you did for them and as a result volunteer your services to do things, which take large chunks of your time and won’t realize the amount of time it …

You usher your new client into the boardroom or client’s interview room and heave a sigh. You need to explain for the 10 millionth time what the role of a client is. Never expect them to automatically understand and remember even though it is the 10 millionth time for you, it is the first time for them. There are some things that need to be explained to them so that they understand what exactly you are expecting from them and how you are going to work with them. They also need to understand the process of designing a website. There is a need to convey to them that ultimately the success or failure of their website lies with them. The input they give in the …

Are you someone capable of being a total innovator? What is an innovator? An innovator is someone who not only has original thoughts of clever and useful ideas but actually can implement them successfully. While many people have good ideas often they fail to act on them or maybe don’t have the know how to implement them. It can take great patience to have the idea, let it percolate in your brain and finally manage to work out how to implement it. The implementation is the crux of the matter. Without implementation that works and is innovative you have nothing but a mess. Coming up with the idea can be a matter of knowing what you want the website to be about and working from …

You get your design instructions from your client and then proceed to start the design. This sounds like the perfect scenario. You are given a gem of a website to develop, and it is going swimmingly. Everything is slotting into place like it was meant to be UNTIL your first meeting with the client. It doesn’t matter what they agreed to the first time around, even if you had every item listed and agreed to in writing. When they return, they have probably talked to every family member from the 9 year old through to the grandmother and each has put in their 5 cents worth.  The client has a completely befuddled view of the site now and has probably changed their mind with each …

I know from experience that too much computer isn’t good for you. You can burn yourself out. You need to be able to balance your life to be able to give your best work. It sounds a little strange to say that being away from the computer can improve your design and inspiration on the computer, but it is true. When you actually think about it what you are actually allowing is that real life is penetrating into your world of design and giving you glimpses of new ideas which with your design mind you absorb unconsciously, and they then reappear as something you can implement in your website either now or later. Being single minded is not good for design. You need to see, …

When you are using typography, there are certain ground rules people learn to enable them, use fonts with the best effect. The most important thing about the type and using a type on a website is that it needs to be readable. The way you would start out choosing your fonts would be to decide on what family you want to use. Once you have decided on the family it is a good idea to keep the main section of your website to the 14 pt size. This means it is easy to be read by most people.  You have various families like Roman, which can come in either italic bold and plain ordinary.  Once you have decided on the family of the font you …

What exactly makes computers green beside the red apple logo? Sorry I just had to wonder considering they just held the “first International Conference on Green Computing” about a month or so ago. How computers, which have to be taken apart carefully and not put out with the normal trash to be destroyed, can be contributing to the greening of the world, I am not quite sure, but I guess we can try to make the earth a happier place by advocating growing gardens and by telling people how to grow gardens and how to build eco friendly homes. Thinking on the subject of greening the world we can make websites around many subjects which can contribute to a greener world like hydroelectric power, wind …

Keeping up to date with the forward march of the web can be a full time job. You really need to allocate at least an hour a day reading up on the latest developments.  I liken it to a doctor who fails to keep up with the real progress in medicine. I don’t mean the pill pushers; I mean the real innovators and the real doctors. One of the main items designers tend to neglect is that of typography. I must admit I am guilty of this too. Too often we tend to have favorites and tend to stick to them rather than explore the hundreds if not thousands that are available. Currently there are now various servers that will both provide you with new …

The most beautiful website in the world can be totally useless if it isn’t well organised with a good flow of design. All elements of your design need to be well integrated with a clearly articulated menu. The need for your website to be totally clear in design with easy to follow steps that are well annotated as to what each contains is extremely important. Here, I anticipate presenting a clear differentiation between what is supposed by most to be attractive in designing and what is actually beautiful, with few steering values to aid designers today to build websites whose splendour is not phony, but rather perks up and augments the experience of the user. What makes a design beautiful?  There are several items, which …
