I know I am very guilty of this. When I am involved with a project, whatever it is, I tend to concentrate on it to exclusion of all else. This really isn’t healthy in more ways than one. When you tend to sit at the computer all day long you aren’t using your muscles the way you should, and you really need to time yourself to move around and do other things in between. When you look at your web design what do you think about with regards to the footer? Is it the part and parcel of your overall design or is it an afterthought? It appears to me that the majority of designers do not make sufficient use of the footer. This area is a whole new area just waiting to be discovered and utilized. We all have clients from hell on occasions. This can happen because of many reasons but the main one is usually because we didn’t convey our message from the beginning. Understanding what a designer does and what their role in the business of web design is, is probably clear to you but does your client understand it? Let’s look at it this way. They come to you because they want a website. Do they know what is required? Probably not! Therefore, it is up to you to take the hour or two to run through the whole thing with them. There have been many a time I have looked at a web page and admired the use of one particular font. I am sure I am not alone in this. There are, however, now means of identifying the font so that you can make a note of it and keep it in mind for future use. Too often one comes across a website that has been crammed with every item under the sun. This is a sure sign of a rank amateur.  The viewer needs to be able to breath between bites of the site. When looking at designing a website one really needs to pick and choose and spread things out. The best thing you can do is start with a list of things you want. Then cut that list down to what you must have.  Those are the items that need to be on the home page. The rest you need to divide into categories and then make up supplementary pages for that info. CAPTCHAs are not accessibility friendly! There I said it. To be honest they are the most unfriendly things on the net. Anyone with bad eyesight can very seldom do them if they ever could. They will not pass the accessibility laws, and personally I think there are easier ways of safeguarding your site from spam bots. It is interesting that so many people have been using it because by using it, you are actually in contravention of the laws of many lands. Speed on the web is very important. People as a race tend to be impatient and on the internet this is all the more apparent.  You need to have fast moving pages. Speed of loading is paramount and this means your code needs to be clean, and if you are using CSS as most of us are nowadays you need to have it condensed into a single line if possible. Your domain is an indication of your site meaning. The reason for a short URL is really to make it memorable and the reasoning being that a short name is easier to remember than a longer one. There are tricks to getting a short meaningful domain name but it really that important? It has always seemed to me that if you get a meaningful name and really brand it, you have a name that anyone will remember so why a short name is important? Because people have kept saying it is. I would rather have a name like http://www.travell-er.com than abcd.com. Travell-er has meaning but abcd doesn’t.
