Websites that give value to the net are those with great graphic features as well as being a work of art. This usually is because they have combined both the good design with great typography. Unfortunately, these tend to be few and far between, and sometimes they work in mysteries formats totally defining the rules of good typography by combining type you would never consider would work. And yet it does and works well too.
Looking through various sites there are several that command mention.
Jason Santamaria has a good use of typography on his site. He has used verve and style to create his minimalist design relying heavily on the typography in such places as the article headers to draw your notice. It is interesting to see how he has used fonts that are not usually used on the web but got away with it without the use of images as replacements.
On Elysium Burns site, you will find bold san serif interspersed with more traditional fonts to create the design effect he wants. Images are used in the CSS image background to make the titles for articles. The combination has been used effectively.
Clear well space fonts are the secret to this crafted design. Well laid out with the good flow and an excellent use of white space. GOOD deserves its name.
To be honest the next one wasn’t my cup of tea although it does have merit.
Future Of Web Apps has made use of many different fonts and colors, which seem to attract attention but to me, it was too busy.
Another minimalist layout The Morning News makes maximum use of typography and uses it to its advantage by creating a site that has laid back colors but a clean well presented feel to it.
This New Zealand Vineyards site has used a black background which is in keeping with their branding and used the white font to make the Black Estate Vineyard site readable. Unfortunately, they have got a scroll with the menu that tends to cover and blot out text on a smaller screen. I am assuming this is the coda slider effect; however, they did not make it transparent enough. Aside from this, the typography is good in a medium that is usually not a good way to go.
The New Yorker has brought its branding font into play here and makes the reader realize the tradition behind what is now a webpage but was once a print magazine.
Meagan Fisher uses various serif fonts and a variety of styles on her own personal site. She has been creative in the use of the hang tag, which has a font not often seen to draw notice to the piece about her.
